Information

Alocasia clypeolata

Alocasia clypeolata

Alocasia clypeolata is a striking and rare tropical species from the Araceae family, native to the Philippines. First described by A. Hay (1999), this intermediate-growing Alocasia is named for its distinctive shield-like leaves — clypeolata derives from the Latin for "small shield" — which are broad, glossy, and deep green with a bold, architectural form and prominent pale veining. Its dramatic foliage and relatively compact growth habit make it a prized and increasingly sought-after species among Alocasia collectors.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates some direct morning or late afternoon sun — avoid intense midday sun which can scorch the leaves
  • Temperature: Intermediate; ideal daytime temperatures 21–27°C (70–80°F), slightly cooler nights 18–21°C (65–70°F); protect from cold drafts
  • Watering: Keep the potting mix consistently moist but never waterlogged; allow the top inch to dry slightly between waterings; ensure the pot has adequate drainage to prevent root rot
  • Humidity: High humidity essential, ideally 70–80%; use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group plants together to increase ambient moisture
  • Substrate: Well-draining, rich potting mix with good aeration; a blend of coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark works well

Alocasia clypeolata is a bold and architecturally impressive species that brings the drama of Philippine rainforests into any tropical collection. Its shield-like glossy leaves and collector's rarity make it a standout species from Ecuagenera, grown with care in Ecuador.
