Information

Philodendron verrucosum Amazonas

Philodendron verrucosum 'Amazonas'

Philodendron verrucosum is one of the most celebrated and visually breathtaking species in the entire Philodendron genus — and the 'Amazonas' form is among the most impressive of all its regional variants. Native to the Amazon basin and surrounding cloud forest foothills of Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, this intermediate to warm-growing form is distinguished by its exceptionally large, velvety leaves in deep emerald green with dramatically contrasting pale to golden-yellow primary veins, and the characteristic bristly, hairy petioles that make verrucosum instantly recognizable. The 'Amazonas' designation reflects its lowland Amazonian provenance — typically producing larger, more lush leaves than highland forms.

Features

  • Foliage: Large, velvety deep emerald green leaves with striking pale to golden primary veins — one of the most dramatic color contrasts in the genus
  • Petioles: Covered in characteristic bristly hairs — the signature tactile feature of P. verrucosum
  • Form: 'Amazonas' — lowland Amazonian provenance, typically producing larger, lusher leaves than highland forms
  • Plant size: 35–45 cm — a well-established specimen already showing the full velvety character of the species
  • Growth habit: Vigorous hemiepiphytic climber; leaves become increasingly large and spectacular as the plant ascends

Care Guide

  • Light: Moderate to bright indirect light; avoid direct sun which can damage the velvety leaf surface
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm, between 16°C and 28°C (61°F – 82°F)
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist; allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings — never waterlogged
  • Humidity: High, 70–90%; the velvety leaves thrive in very humid conditions — the higher the better
  • Soil: Rich, chunky aroid mix with excellent drainage; provide a sturdy moss pole — the bigger it climbs, the more spectacular the leaves

Few plants in the world stop people in their tracks the way Philodendron verrucosum does. Those velvety, iridescent leaves with their glowing veins are simply extraordinary — and the 'Amazonas' form brings that drama at an even larger scale. This is the plant that turns collectors into obsessives. Give it humidity, a pole to climb, and watch it become the crown jewel of your collection.
