Description

Description

This large, epiphytic orchid species is native to New Guinea, thriving in the wet tropical biome. It is known for its relatively distant, ovoid pseudobulbs and large, elliptical leaves. Its name, foetidum, meaning foul-smelling, refers to the unpleasant odor of its flowers, often described as fetid.

  • Light: Requires shaded to filtered light; provide protection from strong sunlight, as it naturally grows in the shaded position of lowland forests.
  • Temperature: Cultivate as a warm-growing species, ideally maintaining daytime temperatures within the 68-86°F (20-30°C) range.
  • Humidity: Requires high ambient humidity, with recommended levels around 70% to ensure optimal growth in its warm, tropical environment.
  • Watering: Water frequently to keep the well-draining medium moist, consistent with its warm-growing, tropical forest habitat.

Additional Notes

The inflorescence is a dense, arching to nodding raceme, producing between 8 to 20 flowers simultaneously, which often do not fully open. The large flowers are notable for having a fetid (foul) fragrance.
