Information

Description

Description

This is a  small species native to the cloud forests of Ecuador. Like most Masdevallia species, it is an epiphyte with a compact, tufted growth habit, lacking pseudobulbs, which makes consistent moisture essential.

  • Light: This orchid requires weak to moderate, indirect light. It should be protected from direct, harsh sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Temperature: This species thrives in intermediate conditions. The ideal daytime range is 55-72°F (12.7-22.2°C), with a slight drop at night.
  • Humidity: High humidity is critical for this species, ideally maintained between 60-80%. Good air circulation is essential to prevent fungal issues, especially when humidity is high.
  • Watering: Water must be liberally applied, and the plant should never be allowed to dry out completely. The potting mix should be kept perpetually moist, with water often applied using distilled or rainwater.

Additional Notes

The flowers of Masdevallia alexportillae are typically solitary and small, showcasing the unique tubular structure formed by the fused sepals, which is characteristic of the genus.
