Description

Native to the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes, Ceratostema lanigerum is a striking epiphytic shrub known for its woolly, velvety leaves (hence "lanigerum," meaning "wool-bearing") and vibrant pendulous flowers.

  • Light: Prefers bright, filtered light (60–70% shade). Avoid direct sun to protect its delicate foliage.
  • Temperature: Cool to intermediate; Day 16–20°C (60–68°F), Night 8–12°C (46–54°F). Sensitive to heat above 25°C (77°F).
  • Humidity: Maintain 80–90% humidity. Use terrariums, humidifiers, or frequent misting.
  • Watering: Keep substrate consistently moist, never waterlogged. Use soft water (rainwater/distilled). Reduce slightly in winter.

Special Notes:

  • Flowers: Brilliant orange-red tubular blooms, attracting hummingbirds.

  • Challenge: Advanced - Due to the possible effects of transport, the plant may suffer stress and lose leaves, which is normal and part of the process of adapting to its new environment. It requires high and stable humidity levels and minimal handling. It is essential to be patient, as leaf loss is normal during the acclimatization period.
