Information

Asplenium trichomanes

Asplenium trichomanes, the "Maidenhair Spleenwort," is a charming and delicate fern with a remarkably wide natural distribution — found growing in rock crevices, mossy walls, and shaded forest floors across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond. One of the most widely distributed ferns in the world, it is beloved for its dainty, pinnate fronds of small, rounded leaflets arranged along a slender dark stem, creating an intricate, lace-like texture that is as refined as it is resilient. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a surprisingly tough and adaptable species, equally at home in a terrarium, a shaded rock garden, or a humid indoor collection.

Care Guide

  • Light: Low to moderate indirect light. This fern thrives in shaded to partially shaded conditions — avoid direct sun, which will dry out and scorch the fine fronds.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm. Comfortable between 14–26°C (57–79°F). A versatile grower that tolerates a wider temperature range than many tropical ferns.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity of 50–70% is ideal. It adapts reasonably well to average indoor conditions but thrives with extra moisture in the air.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but well-drained. Never allow it to dry out completely — consistent moisture is key to keeping the fronds lush and healthy.
  • Soil: A gritty, well-draining mix with good organic content suits this rock-dwelling species well. It also grows beautifully mounted on cork or in a terrarium setup.

Delicate in appearance but tough in character, Asplenium trichomanes is a timeless fern with global appeal — grown with care at Ecuagenera and ready to bring its intricate, lace-like beauty to your collection.
