Description

Description

This miniature epiphytic orchid from the Andean cloud forests of Ecuador was described by the Ecuagenera research team and named in honor of Alex Portilla. It is known for producing numerous small flowers on erect, chain-like inflorescences and requires cool, consistent moisture.

  • Light: Requires bright, filtered, or indirect light. Protect it from direct sun, but sufficient low-to-medium brightness is needed to encourage flowering.
  • Temperature: Prefers cool to intermediate conditions. Ideal temperatures range between 54-75°F (12-24°C). A distinct nightly temperature drop is essential for robust growth and blooming.
  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial, ideally maintained at 70% or higher, as the plant lacks water-storing pseudobulbs. Constant air movement is highly recommended.
  • Watering: The growing media or mount must be kept uniformly moist at all times; never allow it to dry out completely. Regular watering is necessary, ensuring excellent drainage.

Additional Notes

The flowers are typically tiny, triangular, and numerous, arranged closely along an upright inflorescence, creating a striking "chain" or column appearance. This miniature species is best grown mounted on a slab or in small pots with a fine, airy medium.
