Description

Description

One of the more unusual members of the genus, this species sets itself apart by producing multiple flowers simultaneously from a single stem — a rare trait among Masdevallias. Each bloom displays the classic triangular form with fused sepals tapering into slender elongated tails, emerging from a compact, tufted plant.

  • Light: Low to moderate indirect light with 65–75% shade cloth; avoid any direct sun exposure, which quickly damages the delicate foliage.
  • Temperature: Cool grower. Daytime temperatures of 55–65°F (13–18°C) and nighttime lows of 46–54°F (8–12°C); sustained warmth above 70°F (21°C) is detrimental to long-term health.
  • Humidity: 75–90% relative humidity with constant gentle airflow; a humidifier or enclosed cool-growing environment is strongly recommended.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly and consistently moist at all times; water every 3–5 days and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

The epithet hydrae references the many-headed Hydra of Greek mythology, alluding to the species' distinctive multi-flowered stems. Best cultivated mounted on cork bark or tree fern, or in small pots with fine bark or pure sphagnum moss.
