True to its name, this impressive species ranks among the largest in the genus, with substantial flowers featuring broad, fleshy sepals and dramatic proportions that command attention.

  • Light: Bright shade with 50-70% filtration; protect from direct sunlight to prevent foliage damage.
  • Temperature: Cool grower. Daytime 59-72°F (15-22°C), nighttime 50-59°F (10-15°C). Requires a consistent 10-15°F temperature drop between day and night for optimal development.
  • Humidity: 70-85% with strong air circulation; maintain through humidity trays, humidifiers, or greenhouse conditions.
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist year-round; mounted specimens benefit from daily misting, potted plants need watering every 2-3 days.

Additional Notes

Native to Ecuador at 2,200-2,800 meters elevation. Best grown mounted on tree fern or cork bark to accommodate its size, or in medium pots with fine bark mix and sphagnum moss.
