Description

Description

This epiphytic orchid, native to Brazil and Paraguay, is distinguished by cylindrical, laterally compressed pseudobulbs topped by a single linear-elliptic leaf, producing blooms approximately 5 cm in size.

  • Light: Bright and filtered. A high-luminosity location protected from direct sun exposure is recommended, especially during midday hours, to prevent foliage damage.
  • Temperature: 50-85°F (10-29°C). As a plant that grows in both warm and cool climates, it tolerates a wide range but benefits from a drop in nightly temperatures to promote healthy flowering.
  • Humidity: Constant levels between 60-80%. Requires high and stable ambient humidity, complemented by excellent air circulation to prevent water stagnation and fungal diseases.
  • Watering: Regular throughout the year, allowing the roots to dry slightly between applications. It is fundamental to use a rapid-draining substrate, as the root system is sensitive to compacted or poorly aerated media.

Additional notes

This species is known in various collections under the synonyms Onc. novaesae or Onc. zappii. For best results, it is recommended to grow it in baskets or mounted on cork or wood plaques, always using aged water to avoid the buildup of chlorine and mineral salts that could affect its roots.
