Information

Cattleya mendelii

A spectacular species from the mountain ranges of South America, highly celebrated for its stately upright growth habit and grand presence. It produces short, terminal inflorescences from sturdy mature pseudobulbs, displaying a pristine canopy of large, intensely fragrant blossoms that remain a classic favorite for any web gallery or private collection.

  • Light: Bright indirect light or filtered morning sun with a 40–50% shade cloth to protect the foliage from scorching.
  • Temperature: 59–86°F (15–30°C); an adaptable intermediate to warm grower that benefits from a distinct day-to-night temperature drop.
  • Humidity: 60–80%; high humidity paired with gentle, continuous air movement ensures optimal foliage health and clean growth.
  • Watering: Water heavily during active root development, allowing the coarse medium to dry almost completely between applications.

Additional Notes

Cultivation in a coarse bark mix or a large slatted basket easily accommodates its vigorous rooting system and magnificent 7 to 8-inch (17.5–20 cm) flowers. Ships bare root, well established, and should be thoroughly rehydrated at an intermediate temperature before being potted or mounted upon arrival.
