Information

Description

Description

A compact, tufted species that blooms freely on slender upright stems, Masd. hirtzii produces charming flowers with the characteristic triangular Masdevallia form — fused sepals tapering into delicate elongated tails — that reward attentive growers with successive flushes throughout the year.

  • Light: Low to moderate indirect light with 60–70% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate foliage and inhibit flowering.
  • Temperature: Intermediate grower. Daytime temperatures of 59–75°F (15–24°C) and nighttime lows of 50–64°F (10–18°C); consistent cool nights are important for healthy growth and flower development.
  • Humidity: 60–80% relative humidity with good air circulation; humidity trays, a humidifier, or grouping plants together helps maintain adequate moisture levels.
  • Watering: Keep the medium consistently moist but never waterlogged; water thoroughly when the surface begins to dry and ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

Named in honor of Alexander Hirtz, Ecuadorian botanist and orchid explorer. Best grown in fine bark, sphagnum moss, or a mix with perlite in a well-draining pot; repot every 1–2 years when the medium begins to decompose.
