Description

Lepanthes expansa is a miniature epiphytic orchid species native to Ecuador, known for its delicate structure and unusually wide-spreading petals, which give the flower a distinctive open appearance. Despite its tiny size, the blooms are very showy relative to the plant.

  • Light: Provide low to medium filtered light (60–75% shade) similar to the shaded canopy of humid forests. Bright indirect light encourages stronger growth and flowering.
  • Temperature: This species grows naturally around 750–800 m elevation in Ecuador and prefers warm to intermediate conditions. Ideal temperatures are 20–26°C (68–79°F) during the day with nights around 16–20°C (60–68°F).
  • Humidity: Maintain 70–90% humidity with gentle air movement. High humidity is essential for healthy roots and consistent blooming.
  • Watering: Keep the plant evenly moist at all times. Lepanthes have very fine roots and should never dry out completely. Mounted plants may require daily watering or misting, especially in warm environments.

Additional notes:
Lepanthes expansa is a true miniature orchid, ideal for terrariums, orchidariums, or humid greenhouses. The small flowers (around 4 mm) appear successively on short inflorescences emerging from the leaf and may bloom in summer and again in winter when conditions remain stable.

For best results, grow it mounted on cork or tree fern with a thin layer of sphagnum moss, allowing constant moisture and airflow. Its compact growth and distinctive flower shape make it a beautiful addition for collectors of miniature Lepanthes orchids.
