Adelonema peltatum (Mast.) S.Y. Wong & Croat (2016) is a rare and botanically fascinating intermediate to warm-growing aroid species from the tropical rainforests of South America, including Ecuador. A member of the Araceae family, this terrestrial species is defined by one of the most distinctive leaf forms in the plant kingdom: peltate leaves — where the petiole attaches not at the leaf margin but to the underside of the leaf blade itself, creating a shield-like, umbrella form that is immediately striking and unlike almost any other aroid in cultivation. The name says it all: peltatum comes from the Latin pelta, meaning "shield."
The peltate leaf of Adelonema peltatum is one of those botanical details that makes you stop and look twice — a shield held aloft on its own stem, a form so elegant it seems almost architectural. A rare and genuinely unusual aroid from Ecuador’s rainforests, propagated by Ecuagenera for collectors who appreciate the extraordinary diversity of the Araceae family.
