Description

Sophronitis coccinea f. xanthina Culture

  • Light: This orchid thrives in bright, filtered light. Think of the light found in a high-altitude cloud forest, where it is bright but never harsh. A location with strong morning sun, such as an east-facing window, is ideal.
  • Temperature: This species is adaptable to a wider range of temperatures, classifying it as an intermediate-climate orchid. It prefers daytime temperatures between 20-26°C (68-79°F) and a moderate drop at night to 15-18°C (59-65°F).
  • Humidity: High humidity is a must. Aim for levels of 60-80% year-round. Consider growing it in an area with good air circulation but where humidity can be maintained with the help of a humidifier, a humidity tray, or by grouping it with other plants.
  • Watering: Water is a key factor. The substrate should be kept consistently moist but never soggy. Due to its preference for high humidity, this plant does not like to dry out completely. If you are growing it mounted on a plaque, you will need to water it daily or even multiple times a day during warmer, drier periods.

Additional notes:

  • The Sophronitis coccinea f. xanthina is a truly special orchid for two distinct reasons. Firstly, its striking 'xanthina' form, which refers to its pure yellow color, is exceptionally rare. The species is far more commonly found in its brilliant red-to-orange form (coccinea), making this yellow variant a highly sought-after genetic jewel among orchid collectors. Secondly, this charming plant is often affectionately referred to as a "miniature Cattleya" or "mini-cat." Despite its compact size, it produces disproportionately large and vibrant flowers, offering all the visual appeal of a classic Cattleya in a much smaller, space-saving package.
