Information

Pyrrosia lingua

Pyrrosia lingua, commonly known as the tongue fern, offers a distinctive alternative to finely divided fern foliage. Its leathery, tongue-shaped fronds emerge along creeping rhizomes, creating a textured display that gradually spreads across a pot or mount. The green upper surfaces contrast with the softly felted undersides, while mature fertile fronds may develop spore-bearing patches beneath. Watching fresh fronds unfurl adds a quiet sense of discovery to a shaded plant collection.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright indirect light or filtered shade. Protect from intense midday sunlight, especially when grown indoors or newly acclimated.
  • Temperature: Grow in mild to warm conditions. Protect container-grown plants from freezing and sudden temperature changes.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the surface of the growing medium to dry slightly before watering again. Established plants tolerate some drying better than many delicate ferns, but avoid prolonged drought and continuously soggy roots. Mounted plants need more frequent checks.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity with gentle air circulation. Keep away from drying heater vents and avoid stagnant, excessively wet conditions.
  • Potting or Mounting: Use a loose, well-drained mix containing fine bark, coco fiber, and perlite, or grow on a suitable mount. Keep creeping rhizomes at the surface rather than burying them deeply, and allow space for spreading growth.
  • Feeding: Apply a diluted balanced fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Feed lightly and rinse the medium periodically to limit salt buildup.
  • Maintenance: Remove fully dried fronds with clean tools. Do not scrub away the natural felt on the undersides. Spore-bearing patches on mature fronds are part of the fern's reproductive cycle, not necessarily a sign of pests or disease.

With filtered light, balanced moisture, and an airy growing medium, Pyrrosia lingua brings bold frond texture and a gently spreading habit to a thoughtfully maintained fern display.
