Phragmipedium schlimii Culture
Successful cultivation of the charming Phragmipedium schlimii requires replicating its natural habitat conditions. Here are some essential cultural tips to ensure its thriving growth:
Light: Phragmipedium schlimii prefers medium to bright indirect light. It thrives under filtered sunlight, such as in a shaded greenhouse or near an east-facing window. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves.
Temperature: This orchid enjoys intermediate temperatures. Daytime temperatures should range between 18-24°C (64-75°F), with nighttime temperatures around 12-15°C (54-59°F). Cooler nights are beneficial for its growth and flowering.
Humidity: High humidity levels of 60-80% are ideal for Phragmipedium schlimii. Use humidity trays, a humidifier, or regular misting to maintain adequate moisture levels, especially in drier environments.
Watering: This species prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely. Water frequently, ensuring the substrate remains damp but not waterlogged. Use pure water, as Phragmipedium species are sensitive to mineral buildup.
Additional Notes:
Growth Habit: Phragmipedium schlimii is a terrestrial orchid, meaning it grows on the ground in its natural habitat. It forms clumps of slender, arching leaves and produces delicate, slipper-shaped flowers.
Potting: Grow Phragmipedium schlimii in a well-draining mix, such as a combination of fine bark, perlite. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the growing medium.
Blooming: This species typically blooms in late winter to early spring.

I had pre-ordered plants for our local show when, like every other show, it was canceled due to COVID-19. Ecuagenera reached out to arrange shipping and the plants arrived quickly. Great service!

I pre-ordered this and three other plants from Ecuagenera prior to the Santa Barbara orchid show scheduled for March of 2020. I was literally on the airplane to California when closures were announced due to the Coronavirus. The Santa Barbara orchid show was also cancelled, and so I was not able to pick up my plants in person. I think four different staff from Ecuagenera reached out to me via emails and phone calls. We finally connected and the plants arrived at my house a week-plus later, all in fine condition. Well-packed, and just the right amount of moisture to hold them over. Kudos to everyone involved at Ecuagenera! This particular plant has seven good-sized fans (for this species), three of which are new. I expect new roots shortly.
