Description

Description

This small, cool-to-cold growing orchid is native to high-altitude, rocky slopes in Peru, notably around Machu Picchu. Known as "Wajanki" by the Incas, it is famous for its large, vibrant, triangular flowers. It is intolerant of high heat and requires consistently cool conditions.

  • Light: Requires bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Direct sunlight must be avoided as it easily burns the leaves. Maintain strong air movement at all times.
  • Temperature: This is a cool-to-cold grower. The target range is 52-77°F (11-25°C). Ensure a good night drop. It is intolerant of high heat and requires consistently cool conditions.
  • Humidity: High humidity (70-80%) is essential year-round. Excellent air circulation is mandatory to prevent fungal issues in the cool, moist environment.
  • Watering: The potting medium must be kept consistently moist but never waterlogged; do not allow it to dry out. Use rainwater or distilled water, as this species is sensitive to mineral salts.

Additional Notes

The blooms of M. veitchiana are large and single. The flowers are a striking, brilliant orange or cinnabar color, covered with fine purple hairs. This unique combination creates a shimmering, iridescent effect as the flower moves, making it a highly desirable species.
