Information

Bauhinia forficata

Bauhinia forficata, commonly known as the Brazilian Orchid Tree or Pata de Vaca, is a spectacular warm-climate shrub or small tree from the Fabaceae family. Its large, snow-white flowers with long, delicate petals bear a striking resemblance to orchid blooms, making it one of the most ornamental flowering trees for tropical and subtropical gardens. The distinctive twin-lobed, hoof-shaped leaves add year-round visual interest even when the plant is not in flower.

Care Guide

  • Light: Loves full sun. Plant in the brightest spot available to encourage vigorous growth and the most prolific flowering.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm climates with temperatures between 20–35°C (68–95°F). It is sensitive to frost, so in cooler regions it is best grown in containers that can be brought indoors during cold spells.
  • Humidity: Adapts well to a range of humidity levels but appreciates the warmth and moisture of a tropical environment. Regular watering and mulching help maintain soil moisture.
  • Watering: Water generously during the growing and flowering season. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance.
  • Soil & Potting: Prefers well-draining, fertile soil. A loamy mix enriched with organic matter will support healthy growth. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and summer to promote lush foliage and abundant blooms.

Bold, beautiful, and surprisingly easy to grow, Bauhinia forficata is a showpiece plant that transforms any warm garden or patio into a tropical paradise.
