Information

Arpophyllum giganteum var alpinum

Arpophyllum giganteum var. alpinum is the high-altitude form of the celebrated "Candlestick Orchid," first described by Hartweg and Lindley in 1840. Growing at cooler elevations than the typical species, this variety brings the same spectacular, torch-like inflorescences densely packed with small pink flowers, but with a constitution adapted to slightly fresher conditions. Its tall, cylindrical flower spikes and non-resupinate blooms — which face outward rather than twisting upside down like most orchids — give it a uniquely upright, candle-like presence that is instantly recognizable and endlessly admired. An epiphytic species that is forgiving and rewarding in equal measure, it is well suited to both beginners and seasoned collectors.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate gentle morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday exposure to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm. Daytime temperatures of 18–28°C (64–82°F) with nights around 14–16°C (57–60°F) suit this highland variety well.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high, 50–70%. A humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting will keep this epiphyte comfortable.
  • Watering: Water freely during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce frequency in winter to encourage seasonal rest.

A slightly cooler-growing counterpart to the classic Arpophyllum giganteum, the alpinum variety is a wonderful addition for collectors who appreciate botanical variety and the subtle differences that altitude and adaptation can bring to a species.
