Anthurium metallicum Culture

Anthurium metallicum is a captivating plant cherished for its elongated, velvety leaves adorned with striking white veins. Its unique foliage and cooler-growing preference make it a standout addition to any plant collection. Follow these specific care instructions to help your Anthurium metallicum thrive:

Light Requirements: Anthurium metallicum prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant leaf coloration. It can adapt to lower light conditions, but avoid direct sunlight as it can cause leaf burn and damage the plant.

Temperature Range: Unlike many other tropical species, Anthurium metallicum grows best in cooler temperatures. Ideal conditions range from 10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F). It is important to avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) and protect it from cold drafts.

Humidity Needs: High humidity is essential for Anthurium metallicum. Maintain humidity levels between 60% and 80% by using a humidifier, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or grouping it with other humidity-loving plants to create a microclimate.

Watering Schedule: Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Water when the top layer of the substrate feels slightly dry to the touch. Good drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogging and root rot.

Soil Type: Anthurium metallicum thrives in a well-draining, airy potting mix. A blend of orchid bark, peat moss, perlite, and a small amount of charcoal provides the right balance of moisture retention and aeration.

Fertilization: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to salt build-up and harm the roots.

Repotting: Repotting every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound is recommended. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage and refresh the potting mix to support ongoing healthy growth.

Maintenance Tips: To maintain the plant’s stunning appearance, gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their natural sheen. Regularly prune dead or damaged leaves to promote new growth and improve airflow around the plant.

Ordered (4) of these during summer. 3 of the 4 came as offsets of very mature stems, ~3". 2 of the 4 had sizable leaves, up to 12". Roots were good and well established. Would purchase these again.
