Polystachya concreta is a tropical orchid admired for its upright flower spikes bearing numerous small, delicately formed blooms. Its leafy, clumping growth provides a green backdrop to a floral display best appreciated up close. Watching the buds open along a developing spike makes this species an engaging addition for collectors who enjoy the intricate beauty of botanical orchids.
Care Guide
-
Light: Provide bright, filtered light. Protect from harsh midday sunlight and introduce brighter conditions gradually.
-
Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm conditions with slightly cooler nights. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the medium to begin drying between waterings without remaining completely dry for long periods. Ensure free drainage and reduce watering when growth slows.
-
Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity with gentle, continuous air circulation. Avoid stagnant air and water lingering in developing growths.
-
Potting or Mounting: Use a well-drained orchid mix, such as fine to medium bark with perlite and a little loosely arranged sphagnum moss. Mounted plants require more frequent watering and dependable humidity. Keep the bases of new growths above the medium.
-
Feeding: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Reduce feeding when growth slows and flush the medium periodically to limit salt buildup.
-
Maintenance: Refresh decomposing medium as new roots develop, handling roots gently. Allow room for new growths and remove flower spikes once they have finished flowering and dried.
With filtered light, an airy root environment, and watering adjusted to its growth, Polystachya concreta brings delicate floral detail to a thoughtfully maintained orchid collection.
