Description

This is an epiphytic shrub from the Andean cloud forests. It is prized for its unusual, waxy, tubular flowers that hang down gracefully.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is best. Protect it from harsh, direct sun to prevent leaf scorching.
  • Temperature: Prefers cool-to-intermediate conditions. Thrives in daytime temperatures of 68-86°F (20-30°C). A beneficial nighttime temperature drop (to 50-60°F or 10-15°C) helps encourage blooming.
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential, ideally 60% or more. A terrarium, bright bathroom, or humidity tray works well.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top layer of the potting mix feels dry. Keep the mix consistently moist but ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. If your tap water is very hard, use rainwater or distilled water.
  • Challenge: Advanced - Due to the possible effects of transport, the plant may suffer stress and lose leaves, which is normal and part of the process of adapting. It requires high and stable humidity levels and minimal handling. It is essential to be patient with the plant during the acclimatization period.

Additional Notes

The most notable feature is the pendulous, tubular flowers. They are typically bright red to orange-red with a waxy texture, and they hang like small lanterns from the stems, making the plant perfect for a hanging basket.
