Information

Biophytum zenkeri 4

Biophytum zenkeri is a captivating tropical species from the Oxalidaceae family, native to the humid forests of West and Central Africa. Like its Biophytum relatives, it forms a charming, miniature palm-like rosette of pinnate leaves that fold in response to touch and at nightfall — a delightful nyctinastic behavior that makes it as animated as it is ornamental. This warm-growing species, offered here as selection #4 from Ecuagenera’s collection in Ecuador, is a rare African representative of a genus more commonly associated with the Americas, making it a particularly exciting find for the specialist collector.

Care Guide

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can stress the sensitive leaflets and inhibit their natural movement.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions, ideally 20–30°C (68–86°F). As an African tropical species, it appreciates consistent warmth and dislikes temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (60–80%). A terrarium or humid growing environment is ideal, particularly in drier indoor settings.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Ensure excellent drainage to protect its delicate root system.
  • Soil: Use a light, well-draining tropical potting mix with good organic content. Its compact habit makes it well suited to small pots or terrarium planting.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season to support healthy, vigorous growth.

Rare, animated, and hailing from the forests of Africa, Biophytum zenkeri is a truly distinctive addition to the Biophytum lineup. Grown with care by Ecuagenera in Ecuador, this warm-growing African species brings an extra layer of botanical rarity and global diversity to any tropical plant or terrarium collection.
