A charming miniature species from the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, it captivates with delicate rose-pink flowers held on slender upright spikes, displaying the characteristic triangular sepaline tube with elongated tails. Its compact, tufted habit makes it ideal for cool-growing collections.
Additional Notes
Grown by Ecuagenera in the highlands of Ecuador, this species thrives in a fine bark or sphagnum moss mix with excellent drainage. Shipped bare root, well-established.
My experience is that M. rosea resents being shipped. These 2 plants make the 5th time I have tried this species. On 3 of the 4 previous purchases, the plants arrived with extensive root death, were soon ravaged by fungus, and died. This time the 2 plants had some living roots left, have not suffered a fungal attack, and have lost no leaves. I vacillated between giving this shippment a 4 star rating (because I judge the M. rosea are recovering from the shipping stress and the leaves seem fine at 2.5 wks) and 3 star rating (because it will take months for the root system of each plant to regrow.) I think it unlikely that the old healthy leaves will regrow roots. I think I will have to wait for new leaves to form a new root system.
This plant arrived with roughly 40 leaves, and partly dead roots. The plant was big enough to divide into 2 pieces and pot in different media. Now, at nearly 4 wks after arrival, 1 leaf has fallen and the new shoots are emerging among the stalks.
Excellent, large plant.
