Kefersteinia sanguinolenta is a small epiphytic orchid with graceful fans of green leaves and delicate flowers that emerge near the base of the plant. Its finely detailed blooms invite close observation, making it an appealing choice for collectors who appreciate botanical orchids beyond the familiar large-flowered varieties. Positioned where its low-growing flowers can be seen, it offers the pleasure of discovering new buds tucked beneath the foliage.
Care Guide
-
Light: Provide soft, filtered light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Temperature: Maintain intermediate conditions with slightly cooler nights. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged excessive heat.
-
Watering: Keep the roots consistently moist but never waterlogged. Avoid complete drying, as this orchid lacks substantial pseudobulbs for water storage.
-
Humidity: Provide high humidity with gentle, continuous air circulation.
-
Potting: Use an airy, moisture-retentive medium, such as fine bark with perlite and sphagnum moss. Choose a small, well-drained pot or a mount where moisture can be maintained, and do not bury the leaf bases.
-
Feeding: Apply a diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Flush the medium periodically with clean water to reduce salt buildup.
-
Maintenance: Water early in the day so moisture around the leaf bases can dry before night. Refresh decomposing medium gently, taking care of the fine roots and emerging flower spikes.
With steady moisture, humid air, and filtered light, Kefersteinia sanguinolenta adds a quietly intricate floral display to a carefully tended orchid collection.
