This large, epiphytic orchid species is native to New Guinea, thriving in the wet tropical biome. It is known for its relatively distant, ovoid pseudobulbs and large, elliptical leaves. Its name, foetidum, meaning foul-smelling, refers to the unpleasant odor of its flowers, often described as fetid.
The inflorescence is a dense, arching to nodding raceme, producing between 8 to 20 flowers simultaneously, which often do not fully open. The large flowers are notable for having a fetid (foul) fragrance.
