Information

Trichopilia sanguinolenta

A species from the cloud forests of South America, producing solitary or paired flowers on short, pendant inflorescences that emerge from the base of the flattened, compressed pseudobulbs. The broad, spreading sepals and petals have a firm, waxy texture with a slightly undulating margin, and the large, funnel-shaped lip is prominently ruffled at the edges and boldly marked at the throat.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 40–60% shade cloth; avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the broad, leathery leaves.
  • Temperature: 55–72°F (13–22°C); an intermediate grower that benefits from a moderate temperature drop at night.
  • Humidity: 60–80%; moderate to high humidity promotes strong pseudobulb development and reliable blooming.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly and allow the medium to approach dryness between waterings; never allow the roots to sit in standing water.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a coarse bark-based mix in a hanging basket or pot with good drainage to accommodate its pendant inflorescences. Shipped bare root and well established.
