Description

Description

This is an epiphytic orchid native to the cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador, found at elevations between 1,400 and 2,450 meters. This natural form of the type species of the genus Dracula was described by the Ecuagenera research team.

  • Light: Provide low light (around 80% shade) with filtered or diffused illumination. Direct, intense sunlight must be strictly avoided.
  • Temperature: It requires Cool to Intermediate-Cool conditions with cool nights. The ideal range is 55-75°F (13-24°C).
  • Humidity: High ambient humidity (70-80% or higher) is crucial, mimicking its misty habitat. Consistent, strong air movement is essential to prevent fungal issues.
  • Watering: Since this orchid lacks pseudobulbs, the medium must be kept uniformly moist at all times. Use a highly porous, well-draining substrate like Sphagnum moss in a hanging basket, as its inflorescences are pendulous.

Additional Notes

Flowers are among the largest in the genus, featuring large, densely hairy sepals that end in long tails, often spotted red or brown on a creamy background. The form klisiocheilos is specifically distinguished by its involute lip morphology, which forms a pouch.
