Alocasia melo is one of the most texturally extraordinary plants in the entire Araceae family. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, this intermediate-growing species was first described by A.Hay, P.C.Boyce & K.M.Wong and published in Bot. Mag. 14: 84 (1997). It is instantly recognizable by its thick, rigid, deeply ridged leaves with a rough, almost stone-like or melon-rind texture — the name melo referring to this distinctive surface — in a deep blue-green to grey-green color with prominent, pale raised veining. No other Alocasia comes close to replicating this prehistoric, sculptural quality, making it one of the most coveted species among serious collectors.
Alocasia melo is a prehistoric masterpiece — its stone-like, deeply ridged foliage is unlike anything else in the plant world and makes it an instant conversation piece in any collection. A rare and remarkable Bornean species from Ecuagenera, grown with care in Ecuador.
