Acrostichum aureum L. — first published in Sp. Pl.: 1069 (1753) — is one of the world’s most remarkable and ancient ferns, known commonly as the Golden Leather Fern or Mangrove Fern. Native to tropical and subtropical coastal regions worldwide, including Ecuador, this intermediate to warm-growing species from the Pteridaceae family thrives in brackish and freshwater wetlands, mangrove edges, and humid tropical forests. It is one of the largest ferns in the world, capable of producing magnificent arching fronds that can reach 2–3 meters in length, making it a truly spectacular specimen plant for tropical gardens and large indoor spaces.
Acrostichum aureum is a fern with a history as long as botany itself — described by Linnaeus in 1753 and found on tropical coastlines across the globe. Its enormous, arching fronds bring a prehistoric grandeur to any space, and its tolerance for wet conditions makes it uniquely versatile. A majestic species for the grower who thinks big.
