Information

Begonia imperialis

Begonia imperialis is a regal species begonia native to the tropical forests of Mexico, and its name says it all — imperial in presence, with velvety, deep green leaves adorned with intricate silver or pale green patterning that seems almost painted by hand. A low-growing, rhizomatous species, it spreads gracefully and makes a spectacular ground cover in terrariums or a lush statement plant in a shaded indoor setting. Grown by Ecuagenera in Ecuador under intermediate-warm conditions, this is a species that commands attention without demanding much in return.

Care Guide

  • Light: Prefers low to medium indirect light, making it one of the more shade-tolerant begonias. Avoid direct sunlight, which will fade its beautiful markings.
  • Temperature: Thrives in intermediate to warm conditions, ideally 18–26°C (65–79°F). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
  • Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity (55–75%). A terrarium or humidity tray is ideal — avoid misting directly on the velvety leaves to prevent spotting.
  • Watering: Water when the top of the soil begins to dry. As a rhizomatous begonia, it is somewhat drought-tolerant but dislikes sitting in wet soil.
  • Soil: Use a light, well-draining mix with added perlite or orchid bark. Shallow, wide pots suit its spreading rhizomatous growth habit.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a diluted balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season to support healthy foliage.

Majestic, patterned, and surprisingly easy to grow, Begonia imperialis is a species that earns its place in any serious tropical plant collection. Sourced and grown with care by Ecuagenera in Ecuador, this is a living treasure from the forest floor — ready to reign in your home.
