Information

Calathea micans velvety

A species from the tropical forests of South America, grown for its narrow, lanceolate leaves with a distinctly velvety, matte texture and a pale central stripe that runs the full length of the lamina. The undersides are deep purple, creating a striking two-tone contrast visible as the leaves arch outward from the center.

  • Light: Bright indirect light with 60–70% shade cloth; avoid direct sun, which fades the velvety texture and scorches the leaf margins.
  • Temperature: 62–79°F (17–26°C); an intermediate grower that prefers stable warmth and dislikes sudden temperature fluctuations or cold drafts.
  • Humidity: 65–85%; high humidity is essential to maintain the velvety leaf surface and prevent margin browning.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist but never waterlogged; use filtered or rainwater when possible, as Calathea is sensitive to fluoride and mineral buildup.
  • Growth Habit: A clumping, rhizomatous species with an arching, rosette-forming habit. New leaves emerge tightly rolled from the center and unfurl progressively, producing a dense, full specimen over time.

Additional Notes

Best grown in a well-draining mix of fine bark, perlite, and coco coir with good moisture retention. Avoid terracotta pots, which dry the substrate too quickly. Shipped in pot, well-established.
