Information

Guzmania musaica

A captivating epiphytic bromeliad native to the rainforests of Central and South America, instantly recognizable by its broad, strap-shaped leaves adorned with an intricate mosaic of dark brown to black irregular markings on a bright green background — a pattern so distinctive it gives the species its name. A striking foliage plant that also produces a tall, colorful inflorescence with vivid bracts when mature.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; tolerates lower light but the mosaic leaf pattern is most vivid with consistent bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sun.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm growing. 65–82°F (18–28°C); protect from temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: 60–80%; benefits from elevated humidity. Mist the foliage occasionally or use a humidifier.
  • Watering: Keep the central cup (tank) filled with fresh water at all times; flush and refill regularly to prevent stagnation. Water the substrate lightly and allow it to dry slightly between waterings.

Additional Notes:

Foliage forms a broad rosette with bold mosaic patterning — the primary ornamental feature. The plant blooms once at maturity, then produces offsets (pups) that can be separated and grown on. Plant in a well-draining bromeliad or epiphyte mix. Fertilize lightly by adding diluted liquid fertilizer to the central cup monthly during the growing season.
