Philodendron alatisulcatum

This attractive climbing aroid is native to Ecuador. It is highly prized by collectors for the distinctive texture of its leaves. It grows naturally in the understory of tropical forests and can be cultivated on a support or in a hanging basket.

• Light: This plant thrives in bright, indirect light, mimicking the dappled sunlight of the forest understory. Direct sun should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves.
• Temperature: Maintain warm conditions for optimal growth, ideally between 68-86°F (20-30°C). It is very sensitive to cold, so protect it from drafts and avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
• Humidity: High humidity is preferred for this species (70-100%). You can maintain a high-humidity environment by grouping plants, using a pebble tray, or placing it near a humidifier, which encourages larger and healthier leaves.
• Watering: Keep the potting mix consistently moist but never soggy. Ensure the potting mix is well-drained, and allow excess water to drain completely. Overwatering or letting the plant sit in water can lead to root injury and yellowing leaves.

Additional Notes

As a tropical philodendron, it produces an inflorescence (spathe and spadix) typical of the Aroid family. While the plant's distinct foliage is its main attraction, the flower structure can appear on mature specimens.
