Information

Aechmea nudicaulis

Aechmea nudicaulis

Aechmea nudicaulis is a striking and versatile bromeliad native to the tropical forests of South America, including Ecuador. First described by (L.) Griseb. (1864), this intermediate to warm-growing species is notable for its adaptability — it can grow both epiphytically on trees and rocks, and terrestrially on the ground. It forms an elegant rosette of stiff, arching leaves and is a rewarding, easy-care species well suited to tropical collections and indoor environments alike.

Features

  • Foliage: Rosette of stiff, arching leaves — bold and architectural in form, ornamental year-round
  • Growth habit: Epiphytic or terrestrial — naturally grows on trees, rocks, or the ground in its native habitat, giving it exceptional adaptability
  • Family: Bromeliaceae
  • Origin: Tropical forests of South America, including Ecuador — intermediate to warm conditions
  • Taxonomy: (L.) Griseb. (1864)

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; thrives in filtered sunlight similar to its native forest canopy — avoid direct sun to prevent leaf scorch
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm; ideal daytime temperatures 18–27°C (65–80°F), nighttime 15–20°C (59–68°F)
  • Watering: Fill the central tank (rosette) keeping it about ¼ full at all times; use rainwater or distilled water to avoid mineral buildup
  • Humidity: High humidity essential, ideally 50–70%; mist regularly or use a humidity tray in drier or indoor environments
  • Substrate: Well-draining epiphyte or bromeliad mix; can also be grown terrestrially in a loose, organic-rich soil

Aechmea nudicaulis is a resilient and adaptable bromeliad that thrives in a variety of growing conditions. Its bold rosette form and easygoing nature make it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced collectors. A classic South American species from Ecuagenera, grown with care in Ecuador.
