Information

Zootrophion dayanum

A miniature species from the cloud forests of South America, producing small, cage-like flowers with three broad, fused sepals that form a closed, lantern-shaped structure with narrow lateral openings — a highly specialized form adapted for trap pollination by small insects. The flowers are borne singly on short inflorescences that emerge from the base of the small, leathery leaves.

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light with 70–80% shade cloth; avoid any direct sun exposure.
  • Temperature: 50–65°F (10–18°C); a cool grower requiring stable cool temperatures and constant air movement.
  • Humidity: 80–90%; high humidity is critical at all times for healthy growth.
  • Watering: Keep the medium evenly moist; never allow the roots to dry out between waterings.

Additional Notes

Best grown in fine sphagnum moss or mounted on cork bark with excellent drainage and strong air circulation to prevent rot. Shipped bare root and well established.
