Description

Philodendron rugapetiolatum is a highly sought-after, climbing aroid species. Its name highlights its most unique feature: the rugose (wrinkled or ridged) petioles (leaf stems). This species produces elegant, elongated green leaves and requires a vertical support structure like a moss pole to thrive and mature.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is preferred for best growth and color development. Direct sunlight must be avoided as it will scorch the foliage.
  • Temperature: Needs warm conditions. Maintain temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts, and ensure temperatures do not drop below 55°F (13°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity (60-90%) is crucial to mimic its native environment and promote larger, healthier leaves. Boosting humidity via a humidifier or enclosure is highly recommended.
  • Watering: Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry completely between waterings. Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix to prevent soggy conditions, which can quickly lead to root rot.

Additional Notes

Philodendron rugapetiolatum stands out for its elongated leaves, sometimes with reddish or peach tones and pink veins on the underside. It climbs vigorously, so a support such as a moss pole encourages its growth and leaf development.
Caution: Like many Philodendron species, this plant is toxic if ingested.
