Description

Description

This miniature, cane-like orchid is an epiphyte and lithophyte native to the highlands of New Guinea. This specific 'red' form typically originates from the lower end of the species' altitude range, making it one of the easier color variations to cultivate.

  • Light: Requires bright, filtered light. While it can tolerate bright conditions, it must be shielded from direct, intense sun, which can scorch the thick, leathery leaves.
  • Temperature: thrives in cool-to-intermediate conditions (50–80°F) with pronounced day-night temperature fluctuations to promote vigorous blooming.
  • Humidity: High humidity is critical, ideally maintained between 60-80%, to replicate its cloud forest environment. Consistent air movement is necessary to prevent bacterial or fungal growth in these high-humidity conditions.
  • Watering: Water frequently and generously. The growing medium should remain evenly moist at all times and should never be allowed to dry out completely. Many growers prefer mounting this orchid or using a moisture-retentive mix like sphagnum moss.

Additional Notes

This cultivar is celebrated for its striking, long-lasting flowers that appear sporadically throughout the year, often lasting for months. The flowers feature a dark lip, often contrasted by a bright orange tip. The blossoms typically measure 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) across.
