Information

Begonia rex

Begonia rex, the King of Begonias, is the legendary species from which thousands of stunning Rex hybrids have been bred — and the original is every bit as magnificent as its royal title suggests. Native to the subtropical forests of northeastern India and southern China, this warm-growing rhizomatous species is celebrated for its extraordinarily ornate foliage: large, asymmetrical leaves with swirling patterns of silver, green, and deep burgundy that seem to shimmer in the light. Grown by Ecuagenera in Ecuador, this is your chance to own the true species that started it all.

Care Guide

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Good light intensity enhances the metallic sheen and color contrast of the leaves — avoid direct sun, which can cause fading and scorching.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions, ideally 18–28°C (65–82°F). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F).
  • Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity (55–75%). Avoid misting directly on the leaves — use a humidity tray or humidifier to maintain moisture in the air.
  • Watering: Water when the top centimeter of soil feels dry. As a rhizomatous begonia, it stores some moisture in its rhizome and is more tolerant of brief dry spells than overwatering.
  • Soil: Use a light, well-draining mix with perlite or orchid bark. Shallow, wide pots suit its spreading rhizomatous growth habit best.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season to support its lush, dramatic foliage.

There is a reason Begonia rex has inspired generations of plant breeders and collectors — no other species quite matches its regal combination of bold pattern, metallic color, and sheer visual impact. Grown by Ecuagenera and sourced from Ecuador, this is the king of houseplants, ready to reign in your collection.
