Information

Description

Description

A distinctive epiphytic species from the dry and seasonally humid forests of Central America and Mexico, recognized by its unusually long nectar spur — one of the most elongated within the genus. Flowers are well-structured with contrasting colors and a bold lip, carried on upright spikes above flat, mottled leaves that are ornamental even out of bloom.

  • Light: Bright light with 30–50% shade cloth; tolerates more light than most Oncidium alliance genera. Good light promotes flowering.
  • Temperature: 55–85°F (13–29°C); Intermediate to Warm grower. Tolerates a wide temperature range with good air movement.
  • Humidity: 50–70%. Adapts well to moderate humidity; ensure good air circulation to prevent rot during wetter periods.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow to dry out significantly between waterings. A drier rest period in cooler months encourages blooming.

Additional Notes

Grown by Ecuagenera in Ecuador, Trichocentrum longicalcaratum is an underappreciated gem of the Oncidium alliance. Best grown mounted or in well-draining media. Plants are shipped bare root and well-established.
