Description

Description

Named for the sail-like form of its spreading sepals — velifera meaning "sail-bearing" — this intermediate-cool species from Ecuador is one of the few fragrant Masdevallias, adding an olfactory dimension rarely found in the genus. Its distinctive floral structure and delicate scent make it a standout species for any collection.

  • Light: Grow under 50–70% shade cloth; direct sun causes rapid damage to its fine foliage and must be avoided.
  • Temperature: Intermediate-Cool grower. Daytime 57–68°F (14–20°C), nights 46–55°F (8–13°C). Benefits from cool nights; avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 72°F (22°C).
  • Humidity: Requires 75–90% relative humidity; its fine root system benefits greatly from a humidifier with steady air movement to prevent desiccation.
  • Watering: Keep evenly and consistently moist; best grown mounted or in a small pot with fine bark to allow the roots to dry slightly between waterings, with more frequent misting during warmer months.

Additional Notes

Grown at Ecuagenera in the highlands of Ecuador under intermediate-cool mountain conditions. Plants are shipped bare root, well-established, and ready to mount or pot in fine bark or sphagnum moss.
