Description

Description

This orchid is a terrestrial or epiphytic species. It grows on strong, bamboo-like canes up to about 0.75 meters (2.5 feet) tall. It produces impressive, single, short-lived flowers successively that look like large Cattleya blooms.

  • Light: It needs medium bright light (filtered light). Place it where it gets good light but is shielded from direct, harsh sun.
  • Temperature: This is an Intermediate grower. Keep temperatures between a low of 55°F (13°C) at night and a maximum of 85°F (29°C) during the day.
  • Humidity: High humidity is needed, around 60-80%. Always provide strong air movement to prevent spot damage on the foliage and canes.
  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the potting mix moist. Allow the mix to dry slightly between waterings, perhaps watering 2-3 times per week. Never allow the roots to sit in standing water.

Additional Notes

The outstanding flowers are large (up to 5 inches) and open successively at the cane's tip. The colors are striking: creamy yellow sepals and petals contrast with a large, wine-lavender tubular lip. The blooms last only about a day but appear over a long period.
