Description

Description

This spectacular terrestrial or epiphytic orchid is native to Ecuador. It is known for its large size, with cane-like stems that can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall. The flowers are beautiful, showy, and, like most Sobralias, are short-lived. Here are some tips for growing it successfully:

  • Light: This orchid needs very bright, filtered light to flower well (about 50-60% shade). Avoid direct sun to prevent burns.
  • Temperature: Best grown in Warm-Intermediate conditions. Keep day temperatures up to 85-90°F (29-32°C). A night drop to 55-65°F (13-18°C) is necessary.
  • Humidity: High humidity (70% or more) is required due to its large size. Excellent air movement is vital to keep the tall canes healthy and prevent disease.
  • Watering: Water heavily and frequently to ensure the medium is constantly moist all year. Because of its size, it dries out quickly, so use a very well-draining mix to prevent root rot.

Additional Notes

The flowers are large and appear successively on terminal inflorescences. They are bright purple or lavender with a large, round lip that has a bright white spot in the center and a yellow-orange callus.
