Description

Description

This small-sized, hot to warm-growing epiphytic species is found in lowland rainforests of Papua New Guinea at elevations of 40 to 1,200 meters. It features a thick, woody rhizome with ovoid to cylindrical pseudobulbs spaced along it.

  • Light: Provide bright, diffused light, similar to what a Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium requires. Avoid direct, intense sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Temperature: This orchid is a hot to warm grower. The ideal temperature range is 60-90°F (15.5-32.2°C). It can tolerate higher daytime temperatures if provided with adequate air movement and cooling at night.
  • Humidity: High humidity is important, generally 50% or more. In an artificial setting, providing constant misting or high ambient moisture helps the plant thrive.
  • Watering: This species requires constant moisture and should never be allowed to fully dry out. Water liberally and frequently, ensuring the coarse, well-draining medium stays moist between waterings.

Additional Notes

The flowers are medium-sized, about 1 3/4" to 2 1/4" (4.5 to 5.5 cm). The blooms are known to be scented and are found on a short inflorescence. This species is sometimes listed under the synonym Bulbophyllum macranthoides.
