Information

Barbosella orbicularis

Barbosella orbicularis is an utterly charming miniature epiphytic orchid described by Luer in 1977, native to the cloud forests of the Andes. Its name says it all — orbicularis meaning "round" or "circular," a nod to its distinctive small, rounded leaves that form a creeping, mat-like growth habit as the plant spreads horizontally across its mount. The flowers are equally delightful: pale yellow and magenta blooms that punch well above their weight for such a tiny plant. Remarkably adaptable across a wide temperature range, it is one of the more forgiving miniatures in the genus and an excellent choice for terrarium growers and miniature orchid enthusiasts alike.

Care Guide

  • Light: Low to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch the delicate foliage. It adapts well to the lower light levels typical of terrarium setups.
  • Temperature: Intermediate to warm, with good tolerance across a wide range of 10–29°C (50–84°F) — one of the most temperature-flexible species in the genus.
  • Humidity: High humidity of 70–80% is ideal. A terrarium, enclosed case, or humid greenhouse will keep this miniature thriving.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate consistently moist but not soggy. Allow it to dry very slightly between waterings and reduce frequency slightly in winter.
  • Mounting: Grows beautifully mounted on cork bark, where its mat-forming, creeping habit can spread naturally and freely.

Compact, adaptable, and full of personality, Barbosella orbicularis is a delightful miniature for terrarium collections and cool to warm growing spaces — grown with care at Ecuagenera and ready to carpet its mount with tiny round leaves and charming pale blooms.
