Description

This miniature epiphytic orchid from the high-altitude Andes was described by the research team from Ecuagenera. It is a cool-growing orchid known for its unique flowers with fused sepals that end in thin tails, and requires specialized cold conditions.

  • Light: Requires low to medium, filtered light. Excessive light will burn the leaves, while insufficient light leads to dark, weak growth.
  • Temperature: This is a cool to intermediate-growing orchid. Daytime temperatures should ideally range from 65-75°F (18-24°C). A crucial night drop to 50-60°F (10-16°C) is necessary to stimulate blooming. Avoid prolonged heat above 80°F (27°C).
  • Humidity: High humidity (70-80%) is critical. Excellent air circulation must be maintained constantly to prevent leaf spotting and rot in the high-moisture environment.
  • Watering: Water frequently to keep the specialized growing medium constantly moist; it must never be allowed to dry out completely. Use purified or low-salinity water (rainwater is ideal).

Additional Notes

It thrives in cool, humid environments and proves surprisingly manageable for growers willing to meet its specific needs. Cultivate in small containers with fine, breathable substrate—such as premium bark or sphagnum moss—or display mounted on a wooden slab to encourage robust air movement around the roots.
