Information

Laelia colombiana

Laelia colombiana is a South American orchid admired for its elegant, star-shaped flowers and distinctive pseudobulb-bearing growth. Also encountered under the name Schomburgkia colombiana, it offers a striking alternative to more compact orchids, with flowering stems that benefit from generous display space. Watching a new growth mature and its flower spike develop brings a rewarding sense of anticipation to a well-lit orchid collection.

Care Guide

  • Light: Provide bright light with gentle morning sun or well-filtered stronger sunlight. Acclimate gradually to prevent leaf scorch; insufficient light can limit flowering.
  • Temperature: Maintain intermediate to warm conditions with a noticeable drop at night. Protect from frost and cold drafts, and provide ventilation during hot weather.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly while new shoots and roots are actively developing, then allow the medium to dry substantially before watering again. Reduce watering when growth slows, without allowing prolonged severe dehydration. Never leave roots standing in water.
  • Humidity: Provide moderate to high humidity together with steady air circulation. Allow foliage and new shoots to dry promptly after watering.
  • Potting or Mounting: Use a freely draining basket or pot with coarse orchid bark and other durable, airy components. Mounting is suitable where humidity and frequent watering can be maintained. Keep the rhizome at the surface and leave room for new growth.
  • Water Quality: Use low-mineral water when possible and flush the root zone regularly with clean water to reduce salt buildup.
  • Feeding: Apply a dilute, balanced orchid fertilizer during active growth, following the manufacturer's directions. Reduce or pause feeding when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Maintenance: Leave space for developing flower spikes and support them if needed. Preserve healthy older pseudobulbs, which store reserves. Repot when new roots begin to emerge, handling their growing tips carefully, and remove flower stems once fully dry.

With generous light, excellent drainage, and room for its flowering stems, Laelia colombiana brings architectural growth and an elegant floral display to a thoughtfully maintained orchid collection.
