Information

Arundina graminifolia

Arundina graminifolia, the "Bamboo Orchid," is one of the most distinctive and adaptable terrestrial orchids in cultivation. Its tall, slender stems rise gracefully like bamboo canes, topped with elegant, Cattleya-like blooms in soft shades of pink and lavender that open in succession over a long flowering season. Unlike many orchids that demand carefully controlled conditions, this resilient species tolerates full sun and a wide range of environments β€” making it as rewarding for beginners as it is charming for seasoned collectors. Native across a vast range from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia, it has been grown and admired since its formal description by Hochreutiner in 1910.

Care Guide

  • Light: Full sun to bright indirect light. This is one of the few orchids that genuinely thrives in full sun β€” the more light, the more flowers.
  • Temperature: Intermediate. Daytime temperatures of 21–29Β°C (70–85Β°F) and nights of 16–21Β°C (60–70Β°F) are ideal. A versatile grower that adapts well to outdoor tropical and subtropical gardens.
  • Humidity: Tolerates a wide range, but prefers 50–70%. One of the more humidity-flexible orchids available.
  • Watering: Water generously during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce frequency in winter.

Easy to grow, continuously blooming, and unmistakably elegant, Arundina graminifolia is a wonderful orchid for gardens, patios, and bright indoor spaces alike β€” a true workhorse of the orchid world that never stops delivering beauty.
