Description

Description

This is a small, epiphytic or terrestrial shrub in the Ericaceae family, native to montane cloud forests. Known for its delicate flowers and colorful berry-like fruits, the species was described by the Ecuagenera research team.

  • Light: It requires bright, filtered light for optimal growth, similar to what it receives under the canopy of the cloud forest. Avoid exposure to intense direct sunlight, which can easily scorch the leaves of this delicate species.
  • Temperature: This plant thrives in Intermediate-Cool conditions, which are characteristic of its high-altitude habitat. The ideal temperature range is 55-75°F (13-24°C), requiring a distinct temperature drop at night.
  • Humidity: High ambient humidity is crucial, requiring levels between 70-90% to prevent desiccation, mimicking the constant mist of the cloud forest. Good air circulation is necessary to avoid fungal issues in a highly humid environment.
  • Watering: The substrate must be kept consistently moist but should never be allowed to become waterlogged. It is essential to use a very well-draining, airy substrate, as root rot is common in cool, perpetually wet conditions.

Additional Notes

Sphyrospermum species typically produce small, often waxy flowers followed by subglobose, berry-like fruits. The specific epithet croatii honors Dr. Thomas Croat, a renowned botanist specializing in tropical flora.
